University City is located near Sorrento Valley in an
area called the Golden Triangle as it is bordered by the three
freeways. University City is also bordered by Rose Canyon. In the
1800’s, Louis Rose used the canyon for his many businesses of a
tannery, a brickyard and unsuccessful coal mine. Today Rose Canyon
offers residents space for hiking, jogging and nature walking.
La Jolla Playhouse
La Jolla Playhouse is situated on the University of California San
Diego Campus, just minutes from I-5. Performances take place in
three theatres, each within view and a short walk from each other.
The Mandell Weiss Theatre, the largest of the theatres, is a
proscenium stage.
Birch Aquarium
Located atop a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean on the college
campus, Birch Aquarium at Scripps opened its doors and started
greeting guests in 1992. Designed around a central lobby, the
facility branches into three interpretive areas which include Hall
of Fishes with 33 tanks, Hall of Oceanography and a demonstration
tide pool - discovery station. Hall of Fishes sports a huge 70,000
gallon tank among it collection but the aquarium is especially proud
of its display on oceanographic sciences which is considered the
largest in the United States.
This world-famous
establishment is clearly no ordinary zoo. Walk or ride a double-decker bus
throughout this expansive park, home to over 4,000 rare and exotic animals
exhibited in beautiful garden habitats. More than a park, this zoo is a
major research facility although it is cleverly disguised with
entertaining shows and inspiring exhibits like Polar Bear Plunge and Hippo
Beach.
